Kukui Plaza
1255 Nuuanu Ave, Honolulu, HI 96817
Secure and spacious town living.
Kukui Plaza is a behemoth of a complex. It encompasses an entire city block. On its ground floor it has an entire strip mall. And from a bird's eye view, one can see its massive garden deck, the biggest one of its kind.
The story of this complex starts in the later part of the 1960’s when the redevelopment of Honolulu’s Central Business District was at the forefront of the public’s mind. Up until that point, Honolulu had grown and developed organically, expanding as needed to fulfill the bulging population. However, this strategy had left a critical housing crisis in Honolulu’s urban core. This led to the CIty and County of Honolulu establishing a desired “housing-oriented, mixed-use facilities" concept. This concept would not only revitalize and strengthen the aging and increasingly obsolete commercial business district, but it would also help to alleviate the dire housing shortage; a benefit that persists to this day. Developer Oceanside Properties Inc. proposed a condominium project following the City and County’s aforementioned concept in the early 1970’s. The project was to take up the entirety of the block designated “G”. Upon completion, Kukui Plaza was the largest condominium in Hawaii, a designation it still holds to this day, fifty years later. The sheer scale of Kukui Plaza is difficult to visualize. Between the Ewa tower and Diamond Head tower, there are a grand total of 908 units at Kukui Plaza. Each tower rises to a height of 333 feet. |

Perhaps even more impressive is the private 2.6 acre Garden Deck, solely for residents as it’s secured by FOB. The garden deck includes an extensive pond system, and sees ducks visit often. There are extensive well developed trees and shrubbery, something one might never think to see 3 stories up on a building. There is also a swimming pool, complete with changing rooms, and ample room next to the pool to lounge around. At the focal point of the Garden Deck there is a pergola with several barbecues and bench seating. It can be rented out to host large parties (up to 100). There are also several other more secluded barbecues complete with their own benches and tables dotted throughout the Garden Deck. In addition, there is a jogging path which goes throughout the Garden Deck, and provides a nice solitary, peaceful run.
Another feature to note of Kukui Plaza is its impeccable security. There are security desks at the lobbies of both towers, which are manned 24/7 by security officers. Every elevator is secured by FOB, each FOB only allowing access to the level in which it is assigned. The 1811 stall parking structure requires a FOB to enter, and is restricted by a fully fledged security gate so that not even pedestrians may enter the garage. There are also other security measures in place to stop vehicles from trying to force their way into the exit of the parking structure. There are also screens installed along the perimeter of the parking structure, which will help to stop your vehicle from falling off the side of the structure in the event of an accident.

There are community laundry facilities on each floor, with coin-operated machines. However, two and three bedroom units come with space for their own washers and dryers (three bedroom units come with dryer vents, and the two bedroom units do not come with dryer vents).
There is also a meeting room available for residents to use. It is air conditioned and has a small kitchenette inside.
Because Kukui Plaza is one of the few buildings that are self-managed, its homeowners association fee is also relatively quite low.
Lastly, the location of Kukui Plaza is quite conveniently located for anyone who works in and around town, as it is just across the street from the main business district. There are also a number of eateries and grocery stores quite nearby. (There's a Long's Drugs and a Safeway right across the street)
